This beautiful sculpture is of the night goddess, Ratmai. The Gonds have lores related to her. She is described to have a mesmerizing beauty and can hypnotize anyone with her voice. Bastar area of India has craftsmen who do make these stunning metal pieces.
With eleven million people, Gonds are the second largest tribe in Central India. The Gonds are also known as the Raj Gonds. The term was widely used in 1950s, but has now become almost obsolete because Gond Rajas don’t exist anymore. Through their works, the Gond artists seek to preserve the disappearing Gond environment and their longstanding heritage of tales and legends.
